We recently built our home and had it prewired for surround sound in the family room. The builders put junction boxes on the studs where the speakers would go. We had trouble finding any details on how we could install the speakers on our own with these junction boxes being on the stud and not have to cut into the ceiling joist/stud. We definitely did not want to leave the plate cover on the ceiling and put the speakers somewhere else on the ceiling!
So we decided since we were able to do it ourselves then we would make this video to help anyone looking to do this on their own. It saved us plenty of money and is not hard to do.
If you are a little hesitant to cut into your ceiling or wall then stop by your local hardware store such as Home Depot or Lowe’s and then get a 4×4 or small scrap piece of sheetrock and practice on it first.
We got our speakers from Monoprice.com.

I'm building right now and am pre-wiring also. Any buying advice for the speakers themselves?

Thank you sooooo much for this video. This is my second house with speakers throughout but my first time to try installing the speakers myself. My installation is exactly like yours with the gang boxes. This will save me a lot of $$$$. Professional installers are anywhere from $75-$100 an hour. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge!!

You should clean the drywall dust inside the hole with a damp rag.
The cut edge of the dry wall should be covered with masking tape to keep drywall dust out of the speaker.
The worst thing for ceiling speakers is the drywall dust getting in the speaker from installing it or from vibration.

Hi
This video was really helpful in giving me an idea on how to start our own in wall speaker project. The only thing I am not sure of is getting the wires from the ceiling if the house is not pre-wired for 5.1 surround. Do you have any tips on doing this with all the sheet rock in place?
Im thinking I would have to rip out alot of drywall to get all the wires in place. Is there a better alternative to that idea? Thank so much again.

Just about to tackle this project & this video is very helpful. Now I feel confident I can make the cut out even with the junction box in the way! Thanks.

Hi, Just had mine installed by my husband who is loving it. Unfortunately, the basement is under my kitchen area and all I hear is whatever he is watching when he is in the basement. What can be done "inexpensively" to fix this? I am looking on web now and seeing where people have done additional layers of drywall, green glue, etc.. any options for a DIYer that are quicker and less expensive or he will be losing these speakers soon:)

Question: Did you get any quotes on having this professionally done before the project? I'm curious to what the difference is between professional installation vs DIY.
Great job on the video. We're in an identical situation with a new home preinstalled with 5.1 infrastructure.

This helped a lot, but I made my cutout near a stud. Any tips on fixing this?
